John Carmack, CTO of Oculus Inc. announced that a software patch for the Gear VR version of Oculus Home includes numerous improvements, including a large bump in resolution and speed.

The addition of a larger buffer size for cubemaps (1536×1536 compared to 1024×1024) adds a significant benefit to clarity with some users reporting that reading text is now completely usable on the Gear VR.

It also puts the Gear VR system at far higher resolutions than even the Desktop Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, a milestone for Mobile VR with Carmack describing the difference as “going from Standard Definition to High Definition”
